KAZIRA PROJECTS

KAZIRA POULTRY KEEPING PROJECT

In April 2012, Kazira Orphans Project started to establish a chicken farming project that would provide food for the orphans, vocational training for the orphans and an income for the community.  This would allow Charles orphanage to embark on a business venture to bring a sustainable income to the community and in turn fully support the orphan home and the orphans that reside there.

This farming project includes a two-story chicken/egg production buildings that will house 2,000 chickens, a caretaker's home that will also serve as the farm office,  and a variety of vegetables to be harvested on a regular basis.  The produce, eggs, and chickens that are not needed to feed the orphans will be sold or bartered in the local markets for additional provisions.  This farming initiative is a win-win situation because it will allow the orphans to enjoy a more nutritious and varied diet as well as a badly needed income to support other expenses from the orphan home.  And $14,300 is needed to fully develop this farming plot.
The first phase of development for the farming plot is the construction of the security wall around the farm plot and the pit latrine.  Each of the 11,000 blocks will be made by hand and formed with the block making machine.   The second phase of the self-sustaining chicken project will be to build the two-story chicken coop, and  the final phase is to construct a caretaker's home that will also serve as the office for the chicken farm.

LUNCH  PROGRAM

 KAZIRA HOT LUNCH PROGRAM

KAZIRA orphanage program provides a great opportunity to work very closely with children who have mostly neglect, abuse or lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. The big smiles and love of these children towards anyone who is willing to help them in any way, leaves lots of memories in the minds of volunteers and interns, making it hard to part from them at the end of the program. The volunteers and interns teach basic and conversational English. Activities include: games, drawing, organizing day sightseeing with the children, feeding, washing the children and other creative activities.

Background
Kazira Orphaned Nursery and Primary School is a private school.
This school is found in Kabale District in the South western region of the Republic of Uganda. It was founded in 2009 by Mr Kukunda Charles to help the increasing number of orphans and vulnerable children in the region after a wide series of consultations. The project was started by to mainly access HIV/AIDS orphans with education.
KAZIRA Orphaned Nursery School is currently using temporally structures as in the picture above to teach to educate the children and we request well wishers to contribute for the construction of permanent structures.

  • He/She will be required to liaise with the project Director and other staff members to ensure smooth running of the schools programs
  • Other tasks shall include supervising activities implementation and any other duties as may be assigned to him/her by the executive Board.
Volunteer qualities
  • Emotionally strong. The volunteer work requires a person with patience and enthusiasm to innovate and create new ideas.

Working hours
Kazira orphaned N& P/S official working hours are from 8:00 am to     4:00pm. Working with children calls for a volunteer ready to be patient, not                        emotional and prepared to accommodate a diversity of ideologies, ways of doing things and interpretation of variable situations. Therefore, a volunteer shall be required to carry a very open heart that can accommodate these situations. Volunteers work 5 days a week.

Communication
Communication with the school staff is easy because most of them use English. However communication with other members of the community may not be as easy but possibilities for translation are abundant.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Due to the increasing number of unattended orphans or vulnerable children in the community characterized by poverty and HIV/AIDS victims, it is against the above statement that the project came up with an idea to reduce the increasing percentage of street beggars and law breakers.
Besides, many parents die without making any will that will protect or safe –guard their children so the in-laws that.
It is however, against that background that ‘’KAZIRA PROJECT” conceived the idea of establishing a centre for such children.

The community came-up with these objectives below:
1. To provide the children with income generating skills for sustaining them selves where needed.
2. Offer formal education leading to literacy
3. To guide and counsel children with HIV/AIDS and to help them where needed.
4. To sensitize the community and guardians about children’s rights.
5. To sensitize children and the community on HIV/AIDS, primary health care and personal hygiene.
Nevertheless, there is a management committee to gear the affairs of the school following the financial procedures on the ground.

STRATEGIES
1. Mobilize resources with the community for the project.
2. Organizing workshops and sensitize guardians, religious leaders about children’s rights.
3. To instill in the orphans and vulnerable/HIV/AIDS children income generating skills for sustaining them selves for better future.
4. Provide formal education to all on-going school children.

ACHIEVEMENTS
• We have taken children for blood test and those who have HIV/AIDS are on ARVS.
• Children are able to read and write.
• Through guidance and counseling, many guardians have retreated and realized that these children also have rights to education, shelter, medical care and all basic needs.
• Few vocational skills have been achieved.

Dear sir/madam,
The management of  Kazira Nursery and Primary School requests you and other well wishers to pattern –up with them address the following challenges below:

SWIMMING PROGRAM

In 2011L KAZIRA Project started  swimming program for the children and all people of Lake Bunyonyi. The vast majority of people cannot swim, despite the huge part that the lake plays in their lives. Sadly, the lake claims many lives each year – children and adults. Some lives are lost due to canoeing accidents in bad weather, but many are children who fall accidentally into the lake, often while collecting water. In most places the ground slopes very steeply into the lake. Just one meter out from the shore the water can be several meters deep.

Lake Bunyonyi means a ("Place of many little birds") lies in south western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale close to the border with Rwanda. Located at 1,962 m above sea level, it is about 25 km long and 7 km wide. The depth of the lake is rumored to vary between 44 m and 900 m, which if true would make the lake the second deepest in Africa. It is one of the few lakes in the region that is rumored to be free of bilharzia and safe for swimming, however, this claim is not verifiable and patrons of the lake have tested positive as recently as 2012. The lake appears on the 5,000 Ugandan shilling note under the title "Lake Bunyonyi and terraces".
Towns on its shores include Kyevu and Muko while its 29 islands include Punishment Island and Bushara Island. It is a popular location for waterspots and is known for the surrounding terraced hillsides. It is popular with both foreign and domestic tourists and there is a wide variety of tourist accommodation.
The program currently is hiring one man, a local teacher, to teach swimming lessons to children at two landing sites at l.Bunyonyi. It will be expanded in the future time when we shall be training more volunteers, all local teachers, representing other different sites, to teach swimming lessons to children in the community. Swimming lessons are now being offered in these sites.
This is a big step forward for this program, but there remain several thousands around the lake with no means of overcoming their fear of the lake and learning to swim.

NB: We lack swimming materials and salary for swimming teachers.

Please help the project to send swimming materials.
